On a recent business trip to Atlanta, Georgia I was fortunate to have enough time to check out Max Lager’s Wood-Fired Grill and Brewery. It helped that it was a block and a half form my hotel.
As is my usual custom when going to a brewery for the first time I got the sampler. At Max Lager’s it was 6 beers:
- Excuse My English IPA
- Gimme Chocolate Bock
- Max Gold “Let the Gold Rush Begin!”
- Max Red
- HOPSPLOSION!! IPA
- Resurgens Rye Ale
The picture is the beers in the order listed.
All these beers were tasty however two truly stood out to me. First, the “Excuse my English IPA” this English Style IPA (duh!) is a great example of the style. It weighs in at a heft 85 IBUs and 6.5% ABV. Brewed with all English malts, hops and yeast it was one of the best English IPAs I’ve had brewed stateside. The brewer at Max Lager’s has a true love for his craft as he even add chemicals to the water to harden it to match the mineral content of the water found at Burton-on-Trent which truly helped bring out the characteristics of this brew.
The other brew that truly stood out to me was the Gimme Chocolate Bock. While the color was very light for a bock I felt the taste and aroma were spot on. This beer comes in at 20 IBUs and 7% ABV making it an easy drinking beer. Brewed with cocoa nibs from Ghana the chocolate is very present on the nose and in the clean finish. This beer is a dangerous one since it so easy drinking you can knock them down fast, but that 7% ABV will knock you down just as fast.
Besides the beer being great the entire vibe of the place was great. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and yes it was quiet but sometimes its when a place is quiet that you get the best feel. I sat at the bar and the girl behind the bar was friendly and really knew the beers. The decor is pleasing with the Mash Kettle being downstairs and upstairs were the fermenting and conditioning tanks, which are out in the open making for a very cool look.
The food menu was wide varied with many choices and I settled on the wood-fired BBQ Chicken Pizza and I was not disappointed in my decision at all, it was very tasty.
I for sure will be visiting Max Lager’s again if I find myself back in downtown Atlanta. I am sure it would be a great time any time of day or night, the upstairs even has two pool tables and a second bar!!
And that’s … From My Mellin!
