Stone Vertical Epic 09.09.09

I had picked up this bottle of the 09.09.09 back in March of this year and was trying to be more patient with it before trying but something about it kept calling out to me.  Stone Brewing Company is known for great beers and I figured this would be no exception.  However, this didn’t live up to the hype about it in my opinion and I didn’t enjoy it a lot.  Sort of glad I only picked up one bottle and not a few to try over time.  I guess you win some and you lose some.

Stone Vertical Epic 09.09.09

Now on to the details and scores:
Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale
ABV: 8.6 %
IBU: 50
Appearance: 10 out of 10
Aroma: 14 out of 15
Taste: 31 out of 40
Finish: 26 out of 35
Total: 81 out of 100

As I mentioned, I was expecting much much more from this beer than I got.  Meant to be aged and enhance with time I decided to try when it was about a year old.  It had a very nice appearance with a very dark color and a beautiful tan head.  The smell was pleasant with hints of cocoa, mocha and orange amongst some other stuff.   The taste however was not as pleasant, its not very smooth or enjoyable and the taste lingers for a long time.  Having a beer with a lingering taste is usually not a bad thing if that taste and mouth feel (finish) is pleasant and enjoyable, however in this case it was not enjoyable.

Stone will keep turning out great brews I am sure and I still look forward to getting my hands on a bottle of the 10.10.10 Vertical Epic when released and will see how I feel about that. For more information on the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series, click here.
